Breckenridge Town Council to pass defensible fire break space ordinance

Breckenridge Town Council is in the final stages of approving a new ordinance requiring all homeowners to establish a defensible space around their homes in order to help protect lives and property in the event of a forest fire.

Adopting the Red, White and Blue Fire Department recommendations, the defensible space ordinance would require trees or groups of trees within 30 feet of a structure to be well spaced by about 10 feet and well-pruned. Within 75 feet of a structure, trees’ crowns would need to be separated by at least 10 feet.

The new ordinance is set to be adopted and effective as of July 1st, 2009.
